Maple Park, DeKalb County, IL – Illinois State Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Monday afternoon along Interstate 88 following a multi-agency pursuit tied to a missing person case.

According to Illinois State Police, the incident unfolded around 3:12 p.m. on April 27, 2026, on I-88 westbound near Keslinger Road in DeKalb County, west of the Chicago metro area. Authorities said the situation began when a Naperville police officer identified a vehicle connected to a missing person reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis.

Police said the driver allegedly brandished a firearm and fled, prompting a pursuit involving Warrenville officers. The chase continued onto I-88 westbound, where Illinois State Police joined the response. Officials said spike strips were deployed in DeKalb County, bringing the vehicle to a stop near Keslinger Road.

During the encounter, both the driver and a Warrenville police officer reportedly discharged firearms. The driver sustained a gunshot wound and was given life-saving aid at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital, where the individual was later pronounced deceased. No officers were reported injured.

The Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation is reviewing ISP’s involvement, while the Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 is examining the Warrenville officer’s use of force.

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, and findings will be submitted to the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office upon completion.
