Springfield, IL – Violent retail crime is on the rise across Illinois, with new data showing an increase in incidents involving weapons, threats, and repeat offenders.

According to a report from retail crime intelligence company Auror, one in seven retail crime incidents in Illinois involves violence, weapons, or threatening behavior, with overall violent events increasing by 7% over the past year.

The data also highlights the outsized role of repeat offenders. The top 10% of individuals responsible for retail crime accounted for more than 63% of reported incidents statewide, suggesting a concentrated group is driving much of the activity.

Officials say firearms are the most commonly used weapon in these incidents, making up 39% of weapon-related cases, followed by knives and other blades.

The Illinois Organized Retail Crime Association (ILORCA) warns that these trends pose growing risks to both workers and businesses, as organized groups carry out coordinated theft operations that can fund other criminal activity. Retailers across Illinois are estimated to lose more than $2 billion annually to theft, contributing to higher prices and economic strain on communities.

Industry leaders emphasize that stronger coordination between retailers and law enforcement is critical to addressing the issue. Intelligence-sharing platforms are increasingly being used to track repeat offenders and connect incidents across jurisdictions.

Despite increased investment in security measures, officials say retail crime remains a persistent and evolving challenge, particularly as organized networks operate across state lines.

Authorities continue to encourage businesses to report incidents consistently and collaborate with law enforcement to reduce risks and improve safety in stores.
