Chicago, IL – As the busy spring moving season gets underway, Illinois officials are warning residents to take extra precautions when hiring household goods movers to avoid scams, hidden fees, and service issues.

According to the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), consumers should always verify that a moving company is properly licensed in Illinois and review its complaint history before booking services. Officials say failing to do so can lead to unexpected costs or disputes on moving day.

The agency recommends starting the search for a mover at least six weeks in advance and avoiding reliance on mobile apps alone when selecting a company. Instead, residents are encouraged to request in-home estimates, obtain written quotes, and discuss loss or damage protection options upfront.

Consumers should also be aware that movers may require payment of up to 110% of the written estimate at delivery, a standard practice under Illinois regulations. Officials warn that offers of “free” supplies like boxes or tape may come with hidden costs if not clarified in advance.

State regulators say enforcement efforts will increase in the coming weeks, with ICC police conducting patrols and issuing citations for violations such as operating without a license or driving with suspended credentials.

Industry groups, including the Illinois Movers’ and Warehousemen’s Association and the Better Business Bureau, also urge residents to research companies thoroughly and review ratings before making a decision.

Residents can verify a mover’s license or file complaints through the ICC, while those planning interstate moves are advised to check federal resources for additional protections.
