Champaign, IL – Kia and Hyundai owners in Champaign and surrounding communities can now receive a free steering wheel lock as part of an effort to reduce vehicle thefts linked to a widely publicized social media trend.
According to the Champaign Police Department, the anti-theft devices are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the department’s front desk located at 82 E. University Ave.
The program is aimed at owners of certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles that have been targeted in thefts nationwide. Eligible vehicles include Kia models manufactured between 2011 and 2021 and Hyundai models manufactured between 2013 and 2021.
Police said affected vehicle owners do not need to live in Champaign to participate. However, proof of ownership is required before a steering wheel lock can be issued.
The initiative is designed to help deter thefts associated with a social media-driven trend that exposed vulnerabilities in some older Kia and Hyundai vehicles lacking certain anti-theft technology.
Steering wheel locks provide a visible deterrent and make it more difficult for thieves to operate a vehicle, according to law enforcement officials.
Residents seeking a free device should visit the Champaign Police Front Desk near the intersection of First Street and University Avenue. Supplies are limited and will be distributed while available.
Police continue to encourage vehicle owners to lock their doors, remove valuables from sight and report suspicious activity to local authorities.
The department said the program has been expanded to include residents from neighboring communities in an effort to protect more drivers across the region.
