Since its abrupt removal from the Perry Farm Scarecrow Contest, the infamous ICE scarecrow, created by Connect Kankakee, has gone on tour.
The scarecrow has been erected at various locations across the county, including off Interstate 57 exit ramps and on the lawn of the Kankakee County Courthouse. The goal of the creation, deemed as ‘offensive’ by local law enforcement officials which lead to its removal minutes after those complaints were received by the Bourbonnais Township Park District, has been to raise awareness about the ICE contract Kankakee County currently participates in with that agency.
“We house on average 150 ICE detainees every day at Jerome Combs Detention Center as a primary source of income for the county- an income source subject to the whim of political change. Many of these people have no criminal background. Per government statistics, two-thirds have been here over ten years and, as a group is much less likely to commit crimes than native-born citizens.” Connect said in a statement released yesterday.
The group has scheduled a protest for the Kankakee County Board Meeting tomorrow at 8 am. The “ICEman” himself is expected to be in attendance.
