Northfield, NH – A Concord man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly driving the wrong way for over 12 miles on Interstate 93, striking multiple vehicles before being stopped by New Hampshire State Troopers.

According to New Hampshire State Police, the incident began around 4 p.m. when troopers received reports of a pickup truck traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-93 near Exit 16 in Concord. A winter storm had partially covered the roadway with snow, adding to the hazardous conditions. As troopers responded, additional reports indicated the driver continued north, disregarding oncoming traffic.

A trooper attempting to slow traffic encountered the wrong-way driver, who failed to stop and maneuvered around emergency vehicles. Shortly after, authorities reported the suspect struck two vehicles near mile marker 47 before continuing in the wrong direction.

At 4:11 p.m., another trooper deployed a tire deflation device near mile marker 52, successfully puncturing three of the truck’s tires. The vehicle came to a stop in the high-speed lane, and troopers took the driver, identified as Matthew Burt, 33, of Concord, into custody.

Burt has been charged with aggravated DUI, felony reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, conduct after an accident, disobeying an officer, reckless operation, and driving an unregistered vehicle. He was held at the Merrimack County Jail pending arraignment.

Emergency crews evaluated the drivers of the vehicles struck by the wrong-way truck at the scene.

Authorities urge anyone with additional information to contact Trooper Ben Olmstead at Benjamin.M.Olmstead@dos.nh.gov.
