Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred during the execution of a search warrant by a multi-agency task force Thursday morning in Albuquerque.
According to the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau, the incident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at a residence in the 12704 block of Piru Boulevard SE.
Authorities said agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), task force officers from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, and deputies from the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office were serving a search warrant when the shooting occurred.
Investigators said officers announced their presence and knocked on the front door before entering the residence. As agents cleared the first floor, a single gunshot was allegedly fired from the second floor of the home.
According to state police, two Bernalillo County deputies, two DEA agents, and one Sandoval County deputy returned fire toward the source of the gunshot.
Authorities identified the suspect as Victor Pena, 56, who later complied with officers’ commands and was taken into custody without further incident. Pena was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Officials said no law enforcement officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is conducting the investigation. As is standard procedure, investigators will collect evidence, interview those involved, and submit the completed case to the appropriate district attorney for review. State police noted they do not determine whether an officer’s use of force was legally justified.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
