Central Illinois – Residents across central Illinois are bracing for dangerously cold temperatures today, with wind chills plunging to as low as -25°F in some areas. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for the region through 3 p.m. Tuesday, warning of frostbite risks for exposed skin in under 30 minutes.
According to the NWS, areas from Quincy to Bloomington will see the harshest conditions, with temperatures only reaching single digits by midday. Overnight, wind chills could drop again to between -10°F and -15°F, particularly near the Galesburg and Mattoon regions. Temperatures are expected to gradually rise starting Wednesday morning, bringing a slight reprieve from the extreme cold.
Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and keep emergency kits in vehicles. For pet safety, ensure animals have access to warm shelter and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. The NWS advises motorists along I-72 and I-55 to monitor weather updates and prepare for hazardous travel conditions, especially as snow is expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Looking ahead, a warming trend will bring daytime highs into the 20s on Wednesday, with Thursday and Friday expected to see highs in the low 30s. Snowfall north of I-72 could reach up to half an inch by Wednesday evening, potentially creating slick roads for drivers.
The bitter cold is forecasted to ease by the weekend, with Saturday expected to bring highs near 40°F and partly sunny skies. While relief is on the horizon, officials stress the importance of taking precautions during this dangerous cold snap.
