Grand Rapids, MI – Residents of southwest Michigan are bracing for frigid conditions and ongoing lake-effect snow through Wednesday. Temperatures will remain in the single digits, with wind chills dropping as low as -25°F, posing serious frostbite risks for exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. tonight, warning of additional snow accumulations up to two inches near the lakeshore. The advisory also highlights slippery road conditions, particularly on US-131 and near west Michigan’s lakeshore, where visibility may drop suddenly. Drivers are urged to use caution and prepare for extended travel times during both the morning and evening commutes.
Lake-effect snow showers will taper slightly overnight but remain a factor through Wednesday, particularly near the Grand Rapids area and along the I-96 corridor. Wind chills will stay dangerous overnight, with lows near -15°F expected. Snowfall may total three inches in some areas before conditions improve late Thursday.
Looking ahead, temperatures will climb slightly by Friday, with highs near 25°F under mostly cloudy skies. Snow chances return late Saturday, potentially impacting weekend travel.
Stay indoors when possible, wear layered clothing, and limit outdoor exposure to prevent frostbite and hypothermia. For the latest updates on hazardous weather conditions, visit weather.gov or monitor local news outlets.
