Hastings, NE – A powerful cold front is set to grip Nebraska this weekend, bringing plummeting temperatures and dangerous wind chills to the region. Residents near Hastings, particularly along I-80, should prepare for subzero conditions starting Saturday, with wind chills dropping to as low as -22°F in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the cold front will bring north winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph today. By Saturday, temperatures will hover between 19°F and 24°F, accompanied by dry, partly cloudy skies. Saturday night will bring lows near zero, while Sunday ushers in even colder air, with highs ranging from 11°F to 19°F.
The most dangerous conditions are expected Saturday night through Monday morning when wind chills could plunge to -30°F in exposed areas. NWS advises limiting outdoor activities and dressing in layers to prevent frostbite, which can occur within minutes in these conditions.
Travelers along I-80 should remain cautious of icy patches and reduced visibility due to high winds. Those planning weekend travel should monitor the forecast and pack emergency supplies in case of delays or vehicle breakdowns.
Looking ahead, temperatures will slightly rebound on Tuesday, with a high of 25°F under sunny skies. However, another cold night follows, with lows dipping into the teens.
