Sioux Falls, SD – A heat advisory will be in effect this afternoon and evening, with dangerously high temperatures and humidity levels posing health risks. The advisory is set from 1 PM to 8 PM, with temperatures expected to reach a heat index between 95°F and 105°F, particularly warm south of I-90.
According to the US National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the greatest heat concerns will be near and west of the James River, and south of U.S. Highway 18 in northwest Iowa and far southeast South Dakota. Residents are advised to take precautions if spending time outdoors.
Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored clothing, and taking frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning are essential. The weather service also emphasizes the importance of never leaving children or pets in vehicles, even for short periods, as temperatures can quickly become life-threatening.
To avoid heat-related illnesses, residents should adjust the timing of outdoor activities to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is crucial. Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and fainting.
