Chicago, IL – Heavy rain capable of flooding streets and overwhelming drainage systems could begin impacting the Chicago area within hours, as repeated waves of storms move in through the end of the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, showers and thunderstorms will develop this evening and continue in multiple rounds through at least Friday. Some storms may produce rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour tonight and again Wednesday, increasing the risk of rapid flooding in urban areas.
The concern is elevated across northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana, where soils are already saturated and rivers are running high from recent rainfall. In Chicago and surrounding suburbs, poor drainage areas could see water quickly cover roads, especially during heavier downpours late tonight and into the morning commute. Underpasses, viaducts, and low-lying streets are particularly vulnerable.
Rivers including the Fox, Des Plaines, and Kankakee are already above normal levels and may rise further with repeated rainfall. If multiple rounds of storms track over the same areas, more significant river flooding could develop later this week, potentially impacting nearby communities and infrastructure.
Drivers should be prepared for sudden water-covered roads and avoid driving through flooded areas. Residents are encouraged to clear storm drains, secure sump pumps, and monitor alerts as conditions evolve.
The flood threat will persist through the end of the week, with additional advisories or warnings possible as each round of storms develops.
