Melbourne, Florida – Beachgoers along Florida’s Atlantic Coast face life-threatening surf conditions today, with strong rip currents capable of pulling swimmers away from shore within seconds.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a high risk of rip currents remains in effect through Tuesday evening for all Atlantic beaches, including Daytona Beach, Cocoa Beach, and Vero Beach. East-southeast winds will increase to 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph this afternoon, helping build surf to 2 to 4 feet.

While inland areas like Orlando and Kissimmee will stay warm and mostly dry with highs in the mid-80s, a few brief onshore sprinkles may develop along coastal communities, mainly south of Melbourne. Despite the quiet weather inland, ocean conditions remain hazardous.

Officials warn that rip currents can form even on sunny days and often occur near piers and jetties. Swimmers are urged to stay out of the water or remain near lifeguards and never attempt to swim directly against a current.

The elevated rip current risk continues through the day, and additional beach hazard statements may be issued if conditions worsen.
