Aurora, IL – A man was found with a gunshot wound early Monday morning near Aurora’s downtown river area, prompting an active police investigation.

According to the Aurora Police Department, officers responded around 3:24 a.m. Monday to reports of shots fired near River Street and Sard Avenue. Multiple 911 calls and a ShotSpotter alert allegedly indicated gunfire in the area, drawing a rapid response from officers.

Police said responding officers located an adult male on the Gilman Trail suffering from an allegedly lower body gunshot wound. Officers rendered aid until Aurora Fire Department paramedics arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital. He was later transferred to another facility, where he remains in critical but stable condition. Authorities said no additional injuries were reported.

Investigators said officers secured multiple areas near the scene and allegedly located evidence consistent with gunfire. Detectives with the department’s Investigations Bureau are continuing to investigate and are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Evidence technicians processed the scene and collected additional materials for review.

Police said, based on preliminary findings, there is allegedly no indication of an ongoing threat to the broader community. However, the investigation remains active as officials continue to gather information.
