Nashville, TN – A 26-year-old Nashville man was killed early Monday when his car struck the back of a garbage truck on Interstate 40 East, causing the truck to overturn and the car to catch fire, police said.
According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, Kendrick Murry Jr., 26, died at the scene of the two-vehicle collision near Old Hickory Boulevard.
The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. Monday on I-40 East.
Witnesses told investigators that Murry was driving a 2011 Hyundai Genesis at what police described as an extremely high rate of speed when the car struck the rear of a Peterbilt garbage truck.
The impact caused the garbage truck to overturn and the Hyundai to catch fire, according to police.
No one else involved in the collision suffered serious injuries.
Investigators said their preliminary findings indicate speed on the part of the Hyundai driver appears to have contributed to the fatal crash.
Toxicology testing will also be conducted to determine whether impairment may have played a role, police said. The department did not indicate that impairment had been established as a factor.
The collision occurred along I-40 near Old Hickory Boulevard, a major interstate corridor through the Nashville area.
Police identified Murry on Monday as the person killed in the crash as investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The investigation remains preliminary, and additional findings could be released as toxicology testing and the crash investigation continue.
