Kankakee, IL – Kankakee County residents are being warned about a phishing email falsely claiming the county clerk could not confirm their voter registration and directing recipients to click a link.
According to the Kankakee County Clerk’s Office, the email is fraudulent and recipients should not click the included link.
The suspicious message reportedly tells recipients, “Your County Clerk couldn’t confirm registration,” before asking them to follow a link to confirm their voter registration.
The clerk’s office said official information it sends regarding voter registration will be delivered through the mail, not through an unsolicited email asking residents to click a confirmation link.
Officials are also reminding residents to use caution when receiving unexpected emails, particularly messages containing links, attachments or requests for personal information.
The clerk’s office recommends avoiding links when the sender appears suspicious or unexpected. Residents should also avoid enabling macros or additional content in downloaded files when prompted by a questionable message.
Anyone uncertain whether an email is legitimate should contact the purported sender separately using a known and trusted phone number or other verified method rather than responding directly to the suspicious message.
Phishing attempts are commonly designed to convince recipients to follow fraudulent links or provide sensitive information by impersonating trusted organizations.
