Davenport, Iowa – Residents across eastern Iowa and western Illinois have one more pleasant summer day before a widespread soaking rain moves into the region Friday. Dry weather and temperatures in the mid-80s today will give way to numerous showers and embedded thunderstorms, with locally heavy rainfall creating the potential for localized flooding by Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, today’s highs will reach the mid-80s under mostly dry skies. A 30 to 70 percent chance of rain may develop late tonight, mainly west of the Mississippi River, as southerly winds of 5 to 15 mph continue across the region. Communities including Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, Rock Island, Muscatine, Clinton, and Iowa City should enjoy favorable travel conditions through most of the day.
Rain becomes widespread Friday as numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms overspread the area from north to south. High temperatures will cool into the lower to upper 70s, while rain chances increase to 70 to 100 percent. Southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph, will accompany the system.
Forecasters say locally heavy rainfall is likely, with some locations potentially receiving more than 2 inches of rain by Saturday morning. Water may collect on roads and in low-lying areas, especially where repeated rounds of rain occur. Motorists traveling along Interstates 80, 74, 88, and 280 should be prepared for reduced visibility and ponding on roadways.
Lingering showers continue Saturday with highs in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. Northeast winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, will make for a cooler feel as the rain gradually tapers.
Residents should complete outdoor activities today and monitor updated forecasts Friday as rainfall totals become more certain. Additional flood advisories may be issued if heavier rain bands develop.
