Lake Charles, Louisiana – Dangerous summer heat is set to intensify across Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas beginning Sunday, with heat index values climbing above 110 degrees in many communities and a prolonged period of hazardous conditions expected through at least Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, Friday will feature a typical midsummer pattern with highs between 90 and 96 degrees, heat index values of 100 to 107 degrees, and only a 10% to 20% chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. Rain chances fall to near zero over the weekend as a strengthening upper-level ridge builds over the Gulf Coast.

Temperatures continue rising through early next week, with highs reaching 91 to 97 degrees Saturday, 95 to 99 degrees Sunday, 95 to 100 degrees Monday, and 95 to 101 degrees Tuesday. Combined with increasing humidity, afternoon heat index values are expected to climb from 102 to 108 degrees Sunday, 106 to 112 degrees Monday, and 106 to 112 degrees Tuesday.

Cities including Lake Charles, Beaumont, Alexandria, Lafayette, Opelousas, New Iberia, Leesville, DeRidder and Jasper could experience heat index values between 109 and 113 degrees from Sunday through Thursday. The National Weather Service warns that major to extreme heat risk will develop across much of the region, increasing the likelihood of heat-related illnesses for anyone without access to effective cooling.

Residents should drink plenty of water, replace electrolytes when working outdoors, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon and spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.

The hot, dry pattern is expected to persist well into next week, and Heat Advisories or Extreme Heat Warnings are likely as confidence increases in the duration and intensity of the heat.
