Kansas City, MO – Hotter and increasingly humid weather is expected across Missouri over the next several days, with temperatures steadily climbing and heat index values nearing or exceeding 100 degrees before better chances for showers and thunderstorms arrive later this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, temperatures and humidity will continue to build through the remainder of the workweek. Afternoon highs are forecast to reach the middle 90s this weekend and continue into next Monday, while the added humidity will push heat index values into the upper 90s to lower 100s across much of the region.

Kansas City is forecast to reach 91 degrees Tuesday, 91 Wednesday, 92 Thursday, before warming to 95 Friday, 96 Saturday, 93 Sunday, and 91 Monday. Similar temperatures are expected across surrounding communities including St. Joseph, Sedalia, Lee’s Summit, Maryville, and Chillicothe.

Rain chances are also increasing. Forecasters say precipitation probabilities have trended upward, with 10% to 25% chances Wednesday before rising to 40% to 60% Thursday, when scattered showers and thunderstorms become more likely. Additional storm chances continue into Friday before a hotter weekend settles in.

While widespread severe weather is not currently expected, any thunderstorm could produce locally heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds.

Residents should take frequent breaks if working outdoors, drink plenty of water, and limit strenuous afternoon activities as the hottest conditions develop later this week. Keep an eye on the forecast as rain and thunderstorm chances evolve heading into Thursday.
