Albany, NY – Dangerous heat is spreading across much of eastern New York and parts of western New England today, with widespread Heat Advisories in effect as temperatures climb into the upper 90s and heat index values reach the low to mid-100s.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, the Heat Advisory has been expanded to include most of the forecast area, excluding only a few higher-elevation locations. Forecasters say today’s combination of high temperatures and humidity will create Major HeatRisk conditions across much of the region, increasing the risk of heat-related illness for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Many communities are expected to approach or exceed 100-degree heat index values this afternoon. Forecast highs include 99 degrees in Albany with a heat index near 105, 99 in Kingston with a heat index of 104, 98 in Catskill with a heat index of 104, 98 in Poughkeepsie with a heat index around 105, 97 in Amsterdam with a heat index of 103, 97 in Herkimer with a heat index of 103, and 97 in Saratoga Springs with a heat index near 102. Bennington, Vermont, and Brattleboro are also expected to feel close to 100 degrees.
Conditions begin to improve Wednesday as temperatures ease slightly, with a more noticeable cooldown arriving Thursday when many locations return to highs in the 80s and lower 90s.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and check on older adults, children, and anyone without reliable air conditioning. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
