Crown Point, IN – Firefighters rescued a man and his dog from an early morning apartment fire Monday in Crown Point, with the resident remaining hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
According to the Crown Point Fire Department, crews were dispatched at 1:21 a.m. Monday, July 13, to an apartment fire in the 500 block of East Monitor Street. Firefighters arrived on scene at 1:24 a.m. and rescued the apartment’s sole occupant shortly before 1:30 a.m.
The man was transported to a local hospital, where officials said he remains in serious but stable condition.
Firefighters also rescued the resident’s dog, Bruno, who was taken to the Emergency Veterinary Care Center in Highland. Officials said the dog is expected to make a full recovery.
Fire Chief Mark Baumgardner Jr. reminded residents of the importance of maintaining working smoke alarms, noting that functioning smoke detectors can provide earlier warning during a fire. He encouraged residents to test smoke alarms monthly to ensure they are operating properly.
The Crown Point Police Department, Crown Point Emergency Management Agency, Merrillville Fire, Tri-Creek EMS, St. John Fire, Cedar Lake Fire, and Superior Ambulance also responded to the incident.
All responding units cleared the scene by 2:39 a.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and no additional information has been released.
