Albuquerque, New Mexico – Drivers, hikers, and outdoor crews across New Mexico face unusually high heat today, with afternoon temperatures running 12 to 22 degrees above normal and several cities pushing record levels by 4 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, multiple locations are nearing or exceeding long-standing records, including Tucumcari at 91°F, Clovis and Roswell near 88°F, and Albuquerque reaching 80°F—just one degree shy of a historic mark. Santa Fe is expected to hit 77°F, while Clayton could surpass its record with a high near 86°F.

The heat stretches statewide, impacting travel corridors like I-40 and I-25 where pavement temperatures climb rapidly through the afternoon. In eastern New Mexico, the combination of heat and dry air may elevate fire risk, especially near Clovis and Tucumcari. Northern areas such as Chama remain cooler but still above seasonal norms.

Residents should limit outdoor activity during peak heating hours, stay hydrated, and avoid leaving pets or people in vehicles. High winds may bring brief gusty showers into far western New Mexico by late Monday, with broader and more beneficial rainfall expected to reach northern New Mexico by midweek.

This early-season heat spike holds through Sunday evening, with additional updates likely as conditions shift into a more active pattern early this week.
