Miami, Florida – The air already feels heavy across South Florida this Sunday, and the strongest heat of the day has yet to arrive. Sidewalks are warming quickly, beaches are filling up, and heat stress concerns are increasing as temperatures and humidity combine to create dangerous conditions across the Miami metro area.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, a Heat Advisory remains in effect through early evening for Miami-Dade, Broward and Collier counties. Forecasters expect peak heat index values up to 109 degrees, creating conditions that can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
The advisory includes Miami, Miami Beach, Hialeah, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Naples and surrounding communities. The highest risk period occurs from midday through late afternoon when sunshine and tropical humidity reach their peak.
Adding to the weather story, scattered thunderstorms may develop after mid-afternoon. Current projections show around a 30 percent chance of storms today and again Sunday. While coverage should remain scattered, any storm could produce lightning, brief heavy rainfall and localized street flooding.
Drivers along Interstate 95, the Dolphin Expressway, Florida’s Turnpike and U.S. 1 should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions if thunderstorms develop during the afternoon commute period. Wet pavement and reduced visibility may briefly slow travel.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, seek air-conditioned spaces and avoid prolonged strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day. Check on elderly neighbors, children and pets, who remain especially vulnerable during extreme heat events.
Monday brings a brief break from widespread storm chances. Sunshine dominates with highs near 90 degrees, although humidity will continue making conditions feel significantly warmer.
The broader pattern remains locked into a typical South Florida summer setup. Daily temperatures near 90 degrees and scattered afternoon thunderstorms are expected through midweek.
