LaPorte County, IN – Emergency crews rescued and airlifted a driver Tuesday morning after a tree fell onto an SUV in LaPorte County, trapping the victim inside the vehicle.
According to the Kankakee Township Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 7:51 a.m. Tuesday to Fall Road between State Road 2 and US 20 for a reported vehicle accident involving a tree falling onto an SUV.
Firefighters said the driver became pinned inside the vehicle and required extrication. Due to the instability of the fallen tree, responders requested a heavy wrecker to help stabilize the scene so rescue crews could safely work to remove the victim from the SUV.
Once firefighters successfully extricated the patient, the individual was transferred to emergency medical personnel and later airlifted to a hospital for further treatment. Officials did not release the extent of the driver’s injuries.
Multiple agencies assisted in the rescue operation, including the Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department, LaPorte City Fire Department, LaPorte County EMS, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department, LaPorte County Highway Department, Quicks Towing, Lutheran Air III, and LaPorte County E911.
Authorities have not released additional details about what caused the tree to fall onto the SUV or whether weather conditions may have played a role in the incident.
