Miami, FL – Strong to potentially severe thunderstorms are expected across South Florida today, Tuesday, May 12, as a frontal boundary moves into the region, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds through the afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, storms are expected to develop this afternoon and continue into the early evening hours, with scattered to numerous coverage across the east coast metro, including Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.

A marginal risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather is in place, meaning a few storms could become strong. The primary threat is damaging wind gusts, though forecasters say large hail and even an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

In addition to the severe threat, excessive rainfall is a concern. A marginal risk for heavy rain could lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Most locations are expected to receive between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain, but isolated areas could see as much as 3 to 5 inches.

Gusty winds associated with storms may also create hazardous conditions for drivers and outdoor activities, particularly during the late afternoon commute.

Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Those in flood-prone areas should remain especially cautious as heavy downpours develop.
