Roanoke, VA – Drivers traveling along Interstate 81 in western Virginia should prepare for new speed enforcement measures starting Monday, as state police begin a 30-day warning period for newly installed work zone cameras.
The cameras are being activated in northbound lanes between mile markers 143 and 150, covering portions of Roanoke and Botetourt counties.
According to Virginia State Police, the speed safety cameras will go live on May 11, 2026, initially issuing warnings instead of citations during the first 30 days. The goal is to increase awareness and encourage safer driving behavior through active construction zones.
After the warning period ends, vehicles recorded exceeding posted speed limits in the work zone may result in a civil citation mailed to the registered owner. Officials say the fine is set at $100 and does not impact a driver’s record or insurance.
Each violation will be reviewed and validated by Virginia State Police before a citation or warning is issued, authorities said.
Drivers who believe they were cited in error will have the option to challenge the citation. Additional details about the program, including how to contest violations, are available through the Virginia Work Zone Speed Safety Camera Program.
State officials say the initiative is aimed at reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities in highway work zones, where crews face increased risks from speeding vehicles.
