Dimondale, MI – Michigan State Police are warning residents about a scam circulating this week involving fraudulent messages claiming to be from MSP headquarters and requesting money for supposed financial clearances.
According to Michigan State Police, the scam involves text messages and letters that appear official, referencing “police clearance” or the release of financial assets. The documents may include agency letterhead, addresses, and signatures to appear legitimate, but officials say they are not authentic.
Authorities say the scam attempts to convince recipients to send payments in advance—often citing processing or clearance fees tied to international banking or financial accounts. In one example shared by MSP, the message claims funds are being held and requires payments totaling thousands of dollars to complete the release process.
Police emphasize that legitimate law enforcement agencies do not request money for document processing or financial asset releases, especially through unsolicited messages.
According to MSP, common warning signs include urgent demands for payment, references to international banks or debit cards, poor grammar, and unusual wording. Officials urge anyone receiving such messages not to send money or provide personal or banking information.
Residents are encouraged to report suspected scams to their local law enforcement agency. Officials also advise sharing warnings with friends and family to help prevent others from falling victim.
The alert comes as similar impersonation scams continue to surface across the state, targeting individuals through text, email, and social media platforms.
