Naperville, IL – Residents in Naperville will have a chance to pick up free compost this weekend as part of a city-led sustainability effort.

According to the City of Naperville, the giveaway is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with two pickup locations available on the north and south sides of the city. The event is being held in partnership with DuPage County, Will County, Midwest Compost, LLC, and Groot Industries.

Officials say residents can collect ready-to-use compost for gardening and landscaping at the city-owned lot at 91st Street and Wolf’s Crossing Road, as well as the Public Works Service Center on Fort Hill Drive.

Participants are asked to bring their own containers, such as buckets or bags, and can take up to 20 gallons. Compost will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

The material is described as “finished” compost—dark, crumbly, and nutrient-rich—produced from organic materials like food scraps and yard waste. City officials say using compost can improve soil health, boost water retention, and reduce erosion.

The event coincides with International Compost Awareness Week, highlighting the environmental benefits of composting and sustainable waste practices.

City leaders say the initiative aims to support residents’ growing interest in sustainability while providing a practical resource for home and garden use.
