Indianapolis, Indiana — Strong to marginally severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across central Indiana Monday afternoon, with the greatest impact between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. as storms bring damaging winds, hail and localized flooding to Indianapolis, Muncie, Terre Haute, Bloomington and Lafayette.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, storms will intensify during the afternoon and evening hours, with gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to 1 inch possible as instability builds across the region.

This is part of a broader system bringing warmer temperatures and increasing moisture into the Midwest, setting the stage for multiple rounds of storm development early this week.

Heavy downpours may quickly overwhelm drainage systems, leading to water pooling on low-lying roads and underpasses, especially in urban areas of Indianapolis and along I-65 and I-70 corridors. Reduced visibility and slick pavement could slow both afternoon and evening commutes, while strong winds may down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages.

Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and delay travel during severe storms, while residents should secure outdoor items ahead of gusty winds.

The most dangerous conditions are expected between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday, when storms are most likely to intensify and disrupt travel across central Indiana.
