Decatur, IL – Fire safety leaders gathered in Decatur this week to highlight a major milestone: more than 1,000 smoke alarms installed in local homes through a statewide safety initiative.
According to the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM), the installations are part of the “Be Alarmed!” Smoke Alarm Installation Program, which provides free smoke alarms and safety education to residents. In Decatur alone, the program has reached 602 households, helping protect 1,318 residents since its launch.
Officials emphasized the life-saving importance of working smoke alarms. Data from the National Fire Protection Association shows these devices reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by 54%. However, roughly three out of five fire-related deaths occur in homes without working alarms.
State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow said the program plays a critical role in both resident safety and firefighter protection by reducing dangerous rescue situations. Local officials echoed that message, noting that economic pressures often cause families to delay replacing or maintaining alarms.
The program, administered in partnership with Camp I Am Me and OSFM, has distributed more than 52,000 smoke alarms statewide since 2018—valued at over $1.25 million. Officials say more than 70% of alarms replaced in homes were not functioning due to dead batteries, missing batteries, or age.
Fire officials recommend installing smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on each level of the home. Devices should be tested monthly and replaced every 10 years.
Residents interested in the free installation program can contact the Decatur Fire Department or visit the OSFM website for more information.
