Chicago, IL – Millions of Thermos food jars and beverage bottles are being recalled nationwide after reports of serious injuries linked to malfunctioning lids.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall affects about 8.2 million Thermos Stainless King food jars and Thermos Sportsman bottles sold across the country, including Illinois. The recall was announced Wednesday, April 30, 2026.
Officials say the hazard involves the container’s stopper, which can forcefully eject when opened if pressure builds inside. This can cause impact injuries and lacerations. The issue has been tied to at least 27 reported incidents, including cases where consumers were struck in the face. Three people reportedly suffered permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye.
The recall includes 16-ounce, 24-ounce, and 40-ounce containers with model numbers SK3000, SK3020, and SK3010. Products were sold at major retailers such as Target and Walmart, as well as online through Amazon and Thermos websites, between March 2008 and July 2024.
Thermos, headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois, is urging consumers to stop using the affected containers immediately. Depending on the model, customers may receive a replacement stopper or a new bottle at no cost. Some consumers will be required to return the product using a prepaid shipping label.
Officials advise checking the model number printed on the bottom of the container to confirm if it is part of the recall.
