Washington, District of Columbia — Showers and thunderstorms will move into the Washington metro Wednesday afternoon, with the heaviest impacts expected during the evening commute from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. across Washington, Alexandria, Arlington, Bethesda, and Silver Spring.

According to the National Weather Service, rain will begin after 2 p.m. with storms intensifying through late afternoon and evening. Rainfall totals may reach between 0.25 and 0.50 inches, with locally higher amounts in thunderstorms and wind gusts up to 25 mph.

Heavy rain will quickly create slick roads and standing water along major routes including I-95, I-395, and the Capital Beltway. Low-lying underpasses near downtown Washington and flood-prone intersections in Alexandria and Arlington may see rapid water buildup, reducing visibility and slowing traffic within minutes.

This is part of a broader system moving through the Mid-Atlantic, fueled by deep moisture and a passing disturbance enhancing late-day storm development.

Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and allow extra time during the 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. peak window. Secure loose items ahead of gusty winds and remain alert for sudden slowdowns during heavy downpours.
