New York City, New York — Rain will move into the New York City metro area Wednesday afternoon and intensify quickly, with the heaviest impacts expected between 8 p.m. and midnight, disrupting evening travel across New York City, Newark, Jersey City, and Yonkers.

According to the National Weather Service, showers may begin after 2 p.m. Wednesday, but a stronger band develops after 8 p.m., producing up to 0.75 inches of rain by early Thursday. The heaviest corridor includes Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and nearby North Jersey.

The rainfall will create slick roads and reduced visibility within minutes, especially along I-95, the FDR Drive, and the New Jersey Turnpike. Low-lying stretches, including underpasses in Lower Manhattan and flood-prone intersections in Jersey City, may see water pooling during the peak window.

This is part of a broader system moving through the Northeast, fueled by moisture and a passing disturbance that enhances evening rainfall rates.

Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and allow extra travel time during the 8 p.m. to midnight peak. Commuters using subways and buses should expect delays as runoff impacts street-level routes.

Rain continues into Thursday morning from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., with lingering showers keeping roads wet for the morning commute.
