Atlanta, Georgia — Thunderstorms will develop across the Atlanta metro Tuesday afternoon, bringing heavy rain and travel disruptions during the evening commute from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. across Atlanta, Marietta, Sandy Springs, Decatur, and Roswell.

According to the National Weather Service, storms will begin after 4 p.m. with coverage increasing into the evening. Rainfall totals may reach between 0.50 and 0.75 inches, with locally higher amounts in stronger cells.

Heavy downpours will quickly create slick roads and pooling water along major corridors including I-75, I-85, and I-285. Low-lying underpasses in downtown Atlanta and flood-prone intersections in Decatur and Marietta may take on water within minutes, reducing visibility and slowing traffic. Lightning and brief gusty winds could also impact power lines and roadside trees.

This is part of a broader system across the Southeast, where warm, moisture-rich air is fueling scattered thunderstorms.

Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and expect delays during the 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. peak window. Secure outdoor items and monitor alerts for rapidly changing storm conditions.

Storms will continue overnight from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., bringing additional rain and travel disruptions before conditions begin to improve Wednesday morning.
