Germantown, WI – Residents in a Washington County apartment building were forced out early Wednesday morning after a kitchen fire filled multiple units with smoke, prompting a rapid response from local crews.

According to the Germantown Fire Department, the incident was reported around 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, at a multi-family apartment building on the N113W15511 block of Francese Drive. Dispatchers received multiple calls reporting smoke spreading into neighboring units, raising concern for residents across the building.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the rear of the structure, though the fire itself had already been extinguished. Crews immediately began checking for fire extension while assisting Germantown Police in evacuating residents and securing the scene. All occupants were able to exit safely, and no injuries were reported.

Officials noted the timing of the call near a shift change allowed for additional personnel to respond quickly, improving the outcome and eliminating the need for mutual aid from surrounding departments.

The unit where the fire originated sustained moderate smoke damage, while other second-floor units also experienced smoke intrusion. The American Red Cross was called to assist residents displaced by the incident.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by accidental cooking. Initial damage estimates are approximately $20,000.

This incident highlights the speed at which smoke can spread in multi-family buildings and the importance of early reporting and evacuation.
