Springfield, Missouri – Fires could spread rapidly across southern Missouri this afternoon as wind gusts reach up to 35 mph and humidity drops as low as 25 percent before 6 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, hot, dry, and windy conditions are creating elevated to locally significant fire danger across the region. Any spark, including from equipment or discarded cigarettes, could quickly ignite dry grass and spread across open areas.

Cities including Springfield, Joplin, and Branson face the highest risk through the late afternoon, especially along highways like I-44 and U.S. 65 where dry roadside vegetation can fuel fast-moving fires. After 6 p.m., winds will shift and increase further, with gusts between 35 and 40 mph, though rising humidity levels may slightly reduce the fire intensity.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could create sparks. Parking on dry grass or dragging trailer chains could also ignite fires under these conditions.

Conditions will improve Monday, with highs between 56 and 65 degrees under mostly cloudy skies before a warming trend builds midweek. Additional fire weather alerts may be issued if dry and windy conditions persist.
