New Castle County, DE – Four individuals, including three teenagers from Dover, were arrested Thursday morning after a police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle ended in a crash near Middletown, according to Delaware State Police.
According to Delaware State Police, the incident began around 9:50 a.m. Thursday when a trooper with the Highway Safety Unit spotted a Kia Sportage traveling southbound on Route 1 near School House Road at a high rate of speed. When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, the driver allegedly accelerated and refused to stop, prompting a brief pursuit that was later discontinued due to public safety concerns.
Police said the vehicle was soon located near Route 1 and Middletown Odessa Road, where it allegedly continued at high speed before striking a tractor-trailer and overturning in the median. Troopers responded and took all four occupants into custody without further incident. No injuries were reported.
Authorities identified the driver as a 24-year-old Dover man. A 16-year-old male and two 15-year-old males, including one from Harrington, were also in the vehicle. According to police, a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a loaded handgun reported stolen from Alabama. Investigators also determined the Kia had been reported stolen by Dover Police.
All four individuals were charged with multiple offenses, including possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, receiving a stolen firearm, receiving stolen property, and disregarding a police officer signal. The adult suspect was committed to a correctional institution on secured bail, while the juveniles were turned over to family court authorities.
