Abilene, TX – A surge of early-season heat is pushing West Central Texas toward record territory Saturday, with temperatures flirting with 100 degrees and creating dangerous conditions for outdoor activity and travel.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, strong high pressure will drive dry, hot air across the region through the weekend. Forecasters say there is a 40 to 70 percent chance that areas north of Interstate 10 reach at least 100 degrees Saturday, including communities along and north of I-20.
Abilene and San Angelo are both expected to top out near 99 degrees Saturday, which would challenge or exceed the warmest March temperatures ever recorded in both cities. A single degree higher would mark the earliest 100-degree day on record. Cities like Sweetwater, Snyder, and Brownwood also face elevated heat risk, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Drivers along I-20 and U.S. 87 should prepare for heat-related vehicle strain, while residents are urged to limit strenuous outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Power demand may climb as cooling systems run continuously.
The heat will persist into Sunday before slightly easing early next week, though above-average temperatures remain in place. Additional advisories could be issued if confidence in record-breaking heat increases.
