Hastings, Nebraska – Evening drivers along Highway 281 and U.S. 6 should prepare for strong thunderstorms developing after 7 p.m. Thursday, with wind gusts up to 60 mph capable of knocking down small limbs and creating hazardous crosswinds.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk covers much of south-central Nebraska Thursday night. Storms are expected to form during the evening hours and track northeast overnight. The primary threats include hail up to the size of quarters and damaging wind gusts approaching 60 mph. Tornado potential remains low.

The strongest cells may cross Interstate 80 between Grand Island and Kearney before midnight, producing brief heavy rain and sudden visibility drops. Gusty outflow winds could make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles, particularly on open stretches of I-80 and Highway 30.

In Hastings, residents may hear rumbles of thunder through late evening as storms move through Adams County. While widespread flooding is not expected, isolated downpours could create ponding on rural roads and low-lying intersections.

Emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor furniture, park vehicles in garages if possible to protect against hail, and remain indoors when thunder roars. Have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially if storms approach after dark.

Storms should gradually weaken as they move northeast overnight, but additional statements or warnings may be issued if stronger cells develop before midnight Thursday.
