Pueblo, Colorado – Temperatures are surging into the mid-70s across southern Colorado this afternoon, pushing readings nearly 20 degrees above normal and increasing fire concerns along the Interstate 25 corridor through 6 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, mostly sunny skies and downslope winds will allow highs to climb well into the 60s and 70s from Colorado Springs south through Pueblo and Trinidad. Communities east along U.S. 50, including La Junta and Lamar, will also see unseasonably warm conditions before sunset.
The warmth may feel pleasant, but dry air and periodic wind gusts will elevate fire danger, especially in open areas west of I-25 near Canon City and Penrose. Light vegetation remains dormant and highly receptive to ignition. Any spark from roadside equipment or dragging trailer chains could spread quickly in grassy fields.
Drivers along I-25 between Pueblo and Colorado Springs may encounter brief crosswinds during the afternoon. High-profile vehicles should use caution, particularly in exposed stretches south of Fountain. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents should secure loose materials that could be carried by gusty winds.
Another system is expected to approach by Friday, bringing increased precipitation chances and cooler temperatures heading into the weekend. Until then, above-average warmth will continue through Thursday, with shifting winds and changing fire conditions possible each afternoon.
