Springfield, Illinois – A rapid warmup will send temperatures soaring into the mid-70s by Friday afternoon, setting the stage for strong to severe thunderstorms that could disrupt travel along Interstate 55 and Interstate 72 after 4 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a warm front will lift across central Illinois early Friday, pulling in unusually warm and moist air. Storms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front moving in Friday evening. Some storms could become severe, with damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, heavy rainfall and isolated hail.

The greatest concern stretches from Peoria through Bloomington-Normal and south toward Springfield and Decatur. Evening commuters along I-55, I-72 and I-74 may encounter sudden downpours and strong crosswinds during peak travel hours. Farther east, Champaign and areas near I-57 could see storms intensify into the late evening before pushing into Indiana overnight.

Temperatures Friday will run 15 to 20 degrees above early March averages, adding fuel for stronger storm development. The combination of warmth and moisture will allow storms to strengthen quickly once the cold front approaches.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items and monitor alerts before heading out Friday afternoon. Charge devices in case isolated power outages occur, and avoid driving through water-covered roads if heavy rain develops.

Storms are expected to clear later Friday night as the cold front exits, but additional advisories or warnings may be issued as conditions evolve.
