Medford, Oregon – Drivers heading to Crater Lake or Diamond Lake will encounter snow-covered highways by 4 a.m. Wednesday as up to 10 inches of snow and 40 mph wind gusts sweep across the high Cascades.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday for elevations above 5,000 feet in the South Central Oregon Cascades. Snow totals of 6 to 10 inches are expected, with the heaviest accumulation focused around Crater Lake National Park and Diamond Lake.

Probability data shows a 94 percent chance that Crater Lake receives at least 6 inches of snow, a 71 percent chance of 8 inches, and even a 36 percent chance of topping a foot by early Thursday. Winds gusting to 40 mph over exposed ridges could produce blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Highways 62, 138 and 230 will likely turn slick, especially during the Wednesday morning and evening travel windows. Plows will operate, but brief heavy bursts may quickly cover treated pavement.

Travelers should carry chains, slow down and check TripCheck.com or call 511 for the latest conditions before departing. Snow intensity should taper after 10 p.m., though slick spots may linger overnight at higher elevations.
