Springfield, Illinois – Drivers along I-55 and I-72 should prepare for rapidly changing conditions after 3 p.m. Wednesday as strong thunderstorms develop and track east-northeast at nearly 45 mph through the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, multiple rounds of showers and storms are expected across central Illinois, with the main severe window from late Wednesday afternoon through the evening. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph, strong enough to down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages. Hail up to one inch in diameter may damage vehicles and shatter small branches. While the tornado threat remains low, it is not zero.
The highest impacts are expected along the I-55 corridor from Springfield south toward Litchfield and north toward Bloomington. Veterans Parkway and I-72 on the west side of Springfield could see brief visibility drops below one mile in heavy downpours. Locally heavy rainfall may also trigger isolated flash flooding in poor drainage areas, especially where storms repeatedly track over the same location.
Communities including Jacksonville, Decatur and Taylorville should monitor radar closely between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday, when instability peaks. Secure outdoor furniture, park vehicles in garages if possible and avoid unnecessary travel during active warnings.
Storms will shift east later Wednesday night, but additional rounds of rain remain possible into Thursday. More watches or warnings could be issued with little lead time as conditions evolve through midweek.
