Atlanta, Georgia – Temperatures are set to surge nearly 15 degrees above average by 3 p.m. Thursday, sending thermometers along I-75 and I-285 into the mid to upper 80s and pushing close to record territory.

According to the National Weather Service, a broad warmup expanding from the Plains to the East Coast will intensify across Georgia beginning Thursday afternoon. Highs in Atlanta are expected to reach 85 degrees Thursday, climb closer to 88 degrees Friday and Saturday, and challenge daily records at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The heat will peak during the afternoon drive, especially along I-20, GA-400 and the I-85 corridor, where pavement temperatures can run significantly hotter than air temperatures. That added warmth increases the risk of vehicle overheating and places added strain on cooling systems during stop-and-go traffic.

While humidity levels remain moderate, the rapid early-season heat spike may catch some residents off guard. Those working outdoors in Marietta, Sandy Springs and Decatur should hydrate frequently and take breaks during the 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. window when temperatures crest.

Energy demand could also increase as air conditioning use ramps up for the first prolonged stretch this season. Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, where interior temperatures can exceed 110 degrees within minutes.

The unusual warmth holds through Saturday evening before a gradual pattern shift introduces the next chance of showers early next week. Additional temperature records could be tied or broken through Saturday.
