Dodge City, Kansas – Strong thunderstorms could roll across southwest Kansas after 1 a.m. Wednesday, and drivers along US-50 and US-283 may encounter sudden 60 mph wind gusts before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms developing across central Kansas late Tuesday are expected to shift southeast into the region between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. Wednesday. While the overall severe risk remains low, any stronger cell could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter. The tornado threat is minimal, but not zero.

The highest impact window for Dodge City, Garden City and communities along US-400 and US-56 centers on the pre-dawn hours, when instability briefly overlaps with increasing moisture. Wind gusts of that strength can knock down small branches and make high-profile vehicles unstable on open stretches of highway. Brief heavy rain may also reduce visibility below one mile.

Travelers on US-50 west toward Cimarron and east toward Kinsley should stay alert for rapidly changing conditions. Secure outdoor equipment tonight and park vehicles in garages if possible to limit hail damage. Power interruptions cannot be ruled out if isolated stronger cores develop.

Storm activity should weaken after 7 a.m. Wednesday as it shifts east, bringing improving travel conditions by midmorning.

Residents are urged to keep weather alerts enabled on mobile devices overnight. Additional statements or warnings could be issued with little lead time if storms intensify before daybreak Wednesday.
