Binghamton, New York – Roads across the western Catskills and northeast Pennsylvania are turning slick ahead of the evening commute as freezing rain adds a glaze of ice through the overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 a.m. Wednesday for Delaware and Sullivan counties in New York and Northern Wayne, Southern Wayne and Pike counties in Pennsylvania. Ice accumulations could reach up to two tenths of an inch, with up to 1 inch of additional snow and sleet.
Farther north, Otsego and southern Oneida counties, including Oneonta, Rome and Utica, remain under an advisory until 1 a.m., where a light glaze and minor snow accumulation will create slippery stretches on untreated roads.
Interstates 81 and 88 in New York, along with Interstate 84 in Pennsylvania, may see patchy icing, especially on bridges and overpasses. Secondary roads in Delhi, Monticello, Honesdale and Milford could become hazardous after sunset as temperatures hover near freezing.
Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check 511NY or 511PA before traveling. Precipitation tapers late tonight, but icy spots may linger into early Wednesday morning.
