Reno, Nevada – Drivers along US-395 and boaters on Pyramid Lake face dangerous crosswinds within the next 24 hours as gusts ramp up to 50 mph by Wednesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday for Mineral and Southern Lyon counties and the Western Nevada Basin and Range, including Fallon, Fernley, Lovelock and Pyramid Lake. West winds of 20 to 30 mph will gust to 50 mph, generating waves of 2 to 5 feet on Pyramid Lake, highest along the eastern shore. Blowing dust may reduce visibility on north-to-south highways.
In Mono County, California, a Wind Advisory runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday. Southwest gusts up to 50 mph are expected, with wind-prone canyons along US-395 potentially exceeding 65 mph near Mammoth Lakes and Bridgeport.
Farther east, White Pine, Southern Lander, Eureka and Nye counties are under a Wind Advisory from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, where northwest gusts may reach 45 mph around Ely, Tonopah and Eureka.
High-profile vehicles should use extreme caution. Secure loose outdoor items now, charge devices and prepare for isolated power outages. Winds gradually diminish Wednesday night in western Nevada but intensify farther east on Thursday.
