South Bend, Indiana – Temperatures will surge toward 70 degrees by Friday, but repeated rounds of rain could create standing water along US-31 and I-80 before the week ends.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, unseasonably mild air will overspread the region through the workweek, with several waves of rain expected from Tuesday through Saturday. Highs will climb from the 40s early this week into the 60s by Thursday, then approach 70 degrees in some communities by Friday afternoon.

Rain chances increase significantly Tuesday, with widespread showers likely across St. Joseph, Elkhart and Allen counties. Periods of heavier rainfall may reduce visibility along I-94 near Michigan City and along I-69 through Fort Wayne. A few thunderstorms are possible midweek as warmer air deepens across the region.

By Wednesday and Thursday, additional rounds of rain could saturate soils and push smaller rivers closer to flood stage. Low-lying areas and poor-drainage roadways, especially near the St. Joseph and Maumee rivers, may see minor flooding if rainfall totals stack up.

Drivers should watch for ponding water during heavier downpours and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Gusty winds in thunderstorms could also impact high-profile vehicles on north-south routes like US-31 and I-69.

While the warmth may feel like early spring, the combination of rain and rapid snowmelt in northern areas could heighten runoff concerns into the weekend. Residents should monitor river forecasts and stay alert for any flood advisories later this week.
