Louisville, Kentucky – Drivers along I-64 and I-71 could hit slick overpasses before sunrise Monday as a brief burst of snow and freezing rain creates patchy ice by 7 a.m., directly impacting the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday for areas along and north of the I-64 corridor, including Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby and Franklin counties. Forecasters expect a wintry mix of snow, sleet and light freezing rain to develop overnight, with a 40% chance of at least a light slushy coating and a 40% to 70% chance of a thin glaze of ice north of I-64.

Temperatures hovering near 32 degrees will allow bridges and elevated roadways on I-264, I-65 and the Gene Snyder Freeway to freeze first. Even a light 0.01 inch ice glaze can reduce traction and increase stopping distances. Road crews across Louisville Metro and southern Indiana are monitoring conditions, but rapid changes in precipitation type could create isolated slick spots through midmorning.

South of I-64, including Elizabethtown and Bowling Green, mainly light rain is expected, limiting widespread travel issues. The greatest uncertainty sits near and just south of the I-64 corridor, where small temperature shifts will determine whether roads stay wet or briefly ice over.

Drivers should allow extra travel time, reduce speeds on ramps and overpasses, and keep headlights on during periods of reduced visibility. Conditions improve late Monday morning as temperatures climb above freezing and precipitation transitions to plain rain. Additional updates are possible if icing becomes more widespread before 10 a.m. Monday.
