Sitka, Alaska – Snow will intensify quickly after 6 a.m. Saturday, with rates peaking around midday and up to 7 inches expected in Sitka before a rain mix moves in during the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. AKST Saturday for the City and Borough of Sitka, where 4 to 7 inches of snow are expected. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph, leading to brief blowing snow and reduced visibility. Farther south, Admiralty Island, Prince of Wales Island and western Kupreanof and Kuiu islands are under an advisory from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., with 3 to 5 inches forecast and similar wind gusts.
Snow will become steady through the morning as a Gulf low tracks east. In Sitka, the heaviest accumulation is likely around midday before temperatures edge upward and mix precipitation with rain. Roads could turn slushy and slick in a short window.
Communities including Craig, Klawock, Angoon and Kake should prepare for snow-covered roads and limited visibility during heavier bursts. Drivers should slow down and check 511.alaska.gov for updates.
Snow will taper from northwest to southeast Saturday evening, but another round of moisture Sunday could bring additional accumulation, especially near Petersburg and Wrangell.
